DOJA CATÂ STAYEDÂ true to her word of leaving pop to the side and opted for some hot rap verses. On her new single âAttention,â which dropped Friday.
The song opens with the sound of a harp before she starts to sing softly and hauntingly over a drumbeat. While the accompanying music video features Doja roaming the streets of Los Angeles.
âBaby, if you like it, just reach out and pet it/This one doesnât bite. It doesnât get aggressive,â she sings in the pre-chrous. âShow you how to touch it, hold it like itâs precious/It donât need your lovinâ, it just needs attention.â
She then begins to rap in the first verse about herself and addresses. Her decision to leave the Weekndâs After Hours stadium tour. âMy taste good, but I just had to redirect my cookinâ/I couldâve been an opener. I redirect the bookinâ,â she raps. âI read it all, the comments sayinâ, âD, Iâm really shookethâ/âD, you need to see a therapist. Is you lookin?â/Yes, the one I got, they really are the best. Now I feel like I can see you bitches is depressed.â Doja had said in May 2022 that she was skipping the Weeknd tour due to tonsil surgery.
Doja Cat Raps About Other Rappers
In the second verse she raps about other rappers who âfall in the beefâ with musicians they look up to. âIâm sorry, but we all find it really entertaininâ/âCause. We donât wanna see them steppinâ forward on their faces,â she raps. âAnd we all wanna be the one that see the devastation/Nothinâ in it, but ainât the bad press good?â
Tanu Muino (Harry Stylesâ âAs It Was,â Cardi Bâs âUp,â) directed the new âAttentionâ visual. The surreal music video features Doja in a white tee, jeans, and leather jacket. While she evades shrieking fans and people on the street wearing strange flesh-colored masks. Doja in the nude and drenched in what appears to be blood. Flashes momentarily on the screen before appearing one more time at the very end.
What She Said On Twitter
On Twitter, the pop star shared what appeared to be some blood-splattered. Single art with an upside-down letter âA,â along with a date (â6.16.23â) and a drop of blood emoji.
Dojaâs use of the drop of blood emoji in the announcement may offer some clues about the song. Buried in some of her other recent tweets. On May 24, she paired the emoji with the missive, âscarlet was here.â On June 9, she used it again, writing, âscarletâs watching,â and then. This past Monday, June 11, she wrote, âlet myself heal, scar finally sealed.â
In the singleâs teaser trailer, cameras flash and crowds clamor for the rapper. âLook at me, look at me,â she says in the clip. âYou looking?â
âAttentionâ marks Doja Catâs first proper solo release of the year. And just her second overall after appearing on SZAâs âKill Billâ remix. Last year, Doja Cat released âFreaky Deakyâ with Tyga, as well as a contribution to theÂElvis soundtrack. Her most recent album, the massiveÂPlanet Her, arrived in 2021.
Doja Cat & Rolling Stone
She spoke toÂRolling Stone earlier this week about her upcoming album and how sheâs opting to drop music that leans more into hip-hop and rap.
âItâs no longer called First of All. Iâve been messing around with name ideas for the album and have like 8 of them that Iâm deciding between,â she said. âIâll be announcing the real title soon. Iâve been reconnecting with the music that I was raised listening to; Erykah Badu, John Coltrane, Nineties hip hopâ¦the music that influenced me as a kid. I think my new music will bring some of that inspiration forward.â
Doja has been trolling about her old music over the last several months. Doja calledÂPlanet Her and her 2019 breakthroughÂHot Pink âcash-grabsâ and told her fans they âfell for it.âÂ
She added: ânow i can go disappear somewhere and touch grass with my loved ones on an island while yall weep for mediocre pop.â (Around the same time she also joked that she was changing her stage name to âEmcee Flapchunks the 3rd.â)
Even before all that, in April, Doja was making similar remarks, teasing songs with titles like âWet Vagina,â and insisting sheâll release âno more pop,â while calling her rap verses âmid and corny.â She also said her next album would be a ârock/spoken wordâ record titledÂMoist Holes.Â
